Agios Ioannis Beach is one of the most picturesque and quiet destinations on the southern coast of the Heraklion region, located west of Koudouma Monastery and Agios Antonios Beach.
It lies in front of the seaside settlement of the same name, built at an imposing point where the steep slopes of the Asterousia Mountains meet the Libyan Sea. The shore is characterized by fine pebbles and crystal-clear deep waters, surrounded by impressive cavernous rocks that offer a unique setting of wild beauty.
Access to Agios Ioannis is primarily via a demanding but beautiful dirt road starting from the village of Kapetaniana. The route winds through the slopes of Asterousia, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the sea, though it requires caution and a suitable vehicle. Additionally, the settlement is connected to Koudouma Monastery via a coastal path that passes through the cave of Agios Antonios, a route particularly popular with hiking enthusiasts.
Unlike the surrounding completely isolated beaches, Agios Ioannis offers some basic amenities to visitors, as there are rental rooms and traditional tavernas within the settlement. The beach itself remains largely unorganized, preserving its authenticity. It is an ideal destination for those seeking peace and seclusion, while the area's rich seabed is perfect for snorkeling.
