Ancient Apollonia

The city of ancient Apollonia is located 20 km northwest of Heraklion, at the seaside village of Agia Pelagia and as it is believed it was inhabited for the first time in 2000 BC and ruined at 171 BC after an attack by the city of ancient Kidonia.

Ancient Matala

The trademark of Matala is the ancient carved caves on the hillside of white tufa which stands majestically north of the beach.

At Kommos, above the famous beach in the south of the prefecture of Heraklion, there is the archaeological site of the Minoan city of Komos. Kommos in Minoan Crete was one of the two ports of the Minoan palace of Phaistos. Matala was the other one.
