Koutsounari Beach (often called Long Beach) is one of the largest and most impressive coastlines in Crete, stretching for about 5 kilometers.
Located just 7 kilometers east of Ierapetra, it is the first major stop on the route toward Makry Gialos, offering a unique combination of vast expanse and crystal-clear waters.
The main feature of the beach is its fine grey pebbles (resembling coarse sand) and the deep, pristine blue waters of the Libyan Sea. Due to its enormous size, the beach never feels overcrowded, providing space both for those seeking full organization and for those preferring peace and seclusion under the numerous tamarisk trees that offer natural shade.
Koutsounari is fully organized in many spots, featuring umbrellas, sunbeds, showers, and water sports centers, such as the Long Beach Parasailing Center. Along the shore and within the settlement, some of the region's best tavernas operate alongside major hotel complexes (like Robinson Ierapetra and Ostria Resort), making the area a self-contained tourist destination. Access is extremely easy from the main coastal road, with ample parking, making Koutsounari the perfect choice for those who want to enjoy the sea without any space constraints.
