Maridaki is one of the most hidden and authentic seaside destinations in Southern Crete, located on the rugged eastern edges of the Asterousia Mountains in the Heraklion region.
This small settlement falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia and is situated at the exit of the impressive Lichnistis Gorge, right next to Tsoutsouros, from which it is separated by an imposing mountain ridge. The settlement's beach is characterized by dark pebbles and deep, crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea, offering a setting of absolute tranquility that feels untouched by time. The landscape is particularly atmospheric, as the presence of freshwater springs allows for the growth of plane trees and lush vegetation right behind the shore, creating a small oasis of coolness within the otherwise arid and wild Cretan terrain.
Accessing Maridaki is an experience in itself, as the settlement is isolated and lacks easy road access. The most popular way to reach it is via a beautiful coastal path starting from Tsoutsouros, an easy twenty-to-thirty-minute hike that offers stunning views of the sea. For those choosing to go by car, the route follows a challenging mountain dirt road starting from Achendrias, which provides breathtaking panoramic views but requires caution and preferably a high-clearance vehicle. Alternatively, access is very quick by boat from the port of Tsoutsouros.
In terms of facilities, the beach remains completely unorganized, without umbrellas or sunbeds, making it ideal for travelers seeking seclusion and authenticity. Despite its isolated character, the settlement has a few traditional tavernas renowned for their excellent homemade food and fresh fish, as well as a handful of rental rooms for those wishing to spend the night in an environment of total peace. Visitors should explore the caves around the shore or walk into the gorge, and they should come prepared with their own shade equipment if they plan to stay on the beach for many hours.
