Mavri Paralia (Black Beach) is one of the most secluded and rugged destinations on the southern coast of the Heraklion region, located within the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia.
It is situated west of Skiadaki Beach and east of Kaminaki Beach, in the heart of the dramatic Asterousia Mountains landscape. The beach owes its name to the characteristic very dark, almost black pebbles and sand that cover the shore, which, combined with the deep, crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea, create a scene of rare and imposing beauty.
Access to Mavri Paralia is particularly difficult, as the area is steep and lacks any road network. The most recommended way to reach it is by sea with a boat from nearby settlements like Tsoutsouros or Maridaki. For highly experienced hikers, access is possible via extremely rugged paths and local gorges (such as the Pervoliano Gorge located to the west), but the route requires excellent knowledge of the terrain and good physical condition.
Regarding facilities, Mavri Paralia is completely unorganized and pristine. There are no amenities or natural shade from trees, as the surrounding slopes are arid and rocky. Visitors wishing to discover this remote sanctuary must be entirely self-sufficient, carrying their own water, food, and all necessary shade equipment. The beach offers the ultimate experience of isolation and silence, far from any trace of civilization, while its rich and untouched seabed makes it an exceptional spot for underwater exploration.
