Sweet Kolymbos Beach (Glykys Kolymbos) is one of the most stunning and secluded "hidden treasures" of southern Crete, located west of the Tris Ekklisies settlement on the southern slopes of the Asterousia Mountains.
Its name is quite descriptive: "kolymbos" in the Cretan dialect refers to a swimming spot or a small pool, while "sweet" likely refers to the calmness of the waters or the presence of underwater freshwater springs in the area.
The landscape at Sweet Kolymbos is captivating, as the beach is surrounded by tall, vertical cliffs with impressive folds and caves, such as the nearby Perakospilaio. The shore features fine sand and small pebbles, while its waters are deep, crystal-clear, and boast an intense emerald color. The geomorphology of the region provides a unique sense of privacy, making it a favorite destination for those seeking total tranquility far from any trace of mass tourism.
Access to the beach is primarily by sea with a boat from Tris Ekklisies, a very short but beautiful trip. For hiking enthusiasts, land access is possible via a trail that starts from Tris Ekklisies and heads west. The route passes through the wild Asterousia terrain and offers panoramic views of the Libyan Sea, though it requires caution and proper footwear due to the rugged ground.
Regarding organization, the beach is completely unorganized. There is no infrastructure, so visitors must be equipped with water, food, and shade equipment. Natural shade is limited and depends on the rock cavities. The beach's rich and pristine seabed is ideal for snorkeling, offering the chance to observe marine life in an environment that remains untouched by human intervention.
