The Church of Saint Panteleimon is located on the historic island of Spinalonga, at the entrance of the Elounda bay, and is one of the most important places of worship on the island.
Built in 1709, shortly before the Ottoman conquest, the church stands on the western side of the settlement and follows the traditional three-aisled basilica style, with a vaulted central nave.
The church is closely linked to the modern history of Spinalonga, as during the period when the island operated as a leper colony (1903-1957), it served as the main spiritual center for the patients. Saint Panteleimon, known as the patron saint of the sick and physicians, held special significance for the island’s inhabitants. The church was even renovated in 1953 through donations from the patients themselves, reflecting their resilience and faith.
Today, the church is an important point of interest for visitors exploring Spinalonga, offering a powerful sense of history and emotion.
