Kalyves is one of the most picturesque coastal settlements in Chania, built in a privileged location at the entrance of Souda Bay within the fertile region of Apokoronas.
The village is distinguished by the harmonious combination of a traditional Cretan atmosphere with mild tourism development, offering an environment that highlights the authenticity and natural beauty of the area. Its strategic position on the Old National Road ensures easy access to both the city of Chania and Rethymno, as well as the Apokoronas hinterland, neighboring settlements such as Tsivaras, Plaka, and Kalami.
The natural landscape of the settlement is particularly impressive, characterized by an extensive sandy beach with crystal-clear waters, crossed by small rivers that flow into the sea. This presence of running water provides a unique sense of freshness and promotes lush vegetation, making a walk through the village a distinct experience. At the same time, the area carries a significant historical footprint, as the Archaeological Site of Aptera is located a very short distance away; it was one of the most important city-states of ancient Crete, towering over the bay and offering panoramic views.
Regarding visitor amenities, Kalyves features a comprehensive hospitality and dining infrastructure that respects its local character. Along the coastline and near the riverbanks, numerous accommodations, traditional cafes, and taverns operate, where one can taste genuine Cretan flavors and fresh products in a peaceful environment by the sea. The combination of the sea, the river element, and the historical heritage makes the village one of the most attractive destinations on the eastern side of the Chania prefecture.
