Panormo is one of the most picturesque and developed seaside settlements in the Rethymno prefecture, located on the northern coast of Crete.
Due to its strategic position on the main road axis connecting Rethymno and Heraklion, the village has evolved from a small fishing village into a popular tourist destination that nevertheless retains its traditional atmosphere and authentic Cretan identity.
The settlement features fully organized hospitality infrastructure, with numerous apartment complexes and hotel units extending near the coastline, offering panoramic views of the Cretan Sea. Visitors can enjoy the area's clean beaches, such as the well-known Koukistres beach, as well as local gastronomy at dining spots operating within the settlement and the neighboring village of Roumeli.
A noteworthy aspect of Panormo is its rich historical heritage, as the area is identified with the ancient city of Panormos, which served as the seaport for Ancient Eleutherna. One of the most significant sights worth seeing there are the ruins of the Early Christian Basilica of Agia Sophia (5th-6th century), which is one of the largest in Crete and testifies to the settlement's importance during the Byzantine period. Additionally, the restored "Carob Mill" now operates as a cultural center, hosting major artistic events throughout the year.
