Pirgos village is located about 50 kilometers from Heraklion and belonging to Asterousia Municipality.

It was a feud of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and it got its name, which means "tower", during the 1st century AD from a tower located in the area.

It has about 1,000 inhabitants and their main occupations are agricultural. In the area there are several old churches with frescoes and inscriptions dating back to the 7th century.
