The Kazarma Fortress in Sitia is a medieval fortress that was constructed in the 13th century by the Venetians during their rule over Crete.

Its name comes from the Italian “Casa di arma”, meaning “guard barracks,” reflecting its role as a key defensive stronghold protecting the town and harbor of Sitia.

Throughout its history, Kazarma suffered significant damage from earthquakes and pirate attacks. In the mid‑17th century, the Venetians abandoned the town and destroyed parts of the fortifications to prevent them from being used by the Ottomans. The Ottomans later made additions to the interior, which are still visible today.

Today, the fortress remains open to visitors, offering a glimpse into its medieval role and commanding panoramic views over Sitia and its bay, making it an important historical landmark of the region.
