Astrakiano Gorge is one of the most beautiful and accessible natural sanctuaries in the Heraklion region.
Starting from the village of Astrakoi, it stretches along a lush 12-kilometer route, eventually merging with the Kounaviano Gorge to form the larger Karteros Gorge, which leads to the shores of the Cretan Sea.
The gorge is defined by its verdant vegetation and the constant presence of water. The trail is shaded by massive plane trees, willows, and ivy, while the river running through its bed creates a refreshing microclimate, making it an ideal hiking destination even during the summer months. These ruins, alongside the remnants of the abandoned settlement of Kato Astrakoi, bear witness to the area's historical prosperity when water power was the primary energy source for grinding grain.
