Koufonisi is located southeast of Crete, off the coast of Goudouras in the Lasithi region, and is considered one of the most distinctive small islands in the area.

Although not widely known, it stands out for its exotic character and unspoiled natural landscape.

The island is uninhabited and features sandy beaches with fine, light-colored sand and shallow, crystal-clear waters. The most well-known beach is Pori, with an extended sandy shoreline and turquoise hues that resemble more a Cycladic or exotic destination than southern Crete.

Inland, the terrain is dry, with sparse vegetation and prominent sand dunes. Koufonisi also holds significant archaeological interest, as remains of ancient settlements, a theater, and quarries have been discovered, indicating that the island was inhabited and used in antiquity.

Access is only possible by boat, mainly from Makry Gialos or Goudouras, and there are no organized facilities or services. Visitors are advised to be well prepared, especially regarding water and shade.

Koufonisi offers a unique combination of isolation, clear waters, and historical importance, providing an experience that differs from the more popular beaches of Crete.
