Bramiana Dam is located in southeastern Crete, within the Lasithi regional unit, a short distance from the town of Ierapetra.

It is one of the most important artificial lakes on the island and plays a key role in irrigating the wider area.

The reservoir was created to meet the increasing water demands of Ierapetra, one of the most productive agricultural regions in Crete, known for its extensive greenhouse cultivation. Its waters are primarily used for irrigation, supporting local farming and contributing significantly to the regional economy.

Despite its artificial origin, the lake has developed into an important wetland habitat. The permanent presence of water throughout the year attracts a wide variety of bird species, making it a significant site for migratory birds as well as a refuge for resident wildlife.

The surrounding landscape combines natural tranquility with human intervention, creating an environment where agriculture and nature coexist. Reeds and aquatic vegetation enhance biodiversity and give the lake a distinct ecological character.
