The Historical Museum of Crete was founded in 1953 by the Company of Cretan Historical Studies and is housed in a neoclassical building of great value.

The museum manages to safeguard the Cretan history from the early Byzantine years until modern times.

More specifically Byzantine art and culture are highlighted through the exhibits, but also Venetian and Ottoman domination, the Second World War, the Cretan Battle and resistance as well as the folk culture of Crete.

The Historical Museum includes 25 areas that cover 17 centuries of history. Also, it includes a library, a shop and a cafeteria.
