Kaki Skala Beach is essentially the first major organized shore one encounters heading east from Ierapetra toward Makry Gialos, located just before the settlement of Ferma.
Despite its somewhat "rugged" name —which stems from the old, difficult mountain pass of the area— the beach is a beautiful and serene destination surrounded by tall cliffs and lush pine trees that reach almost to the water's edge.
The shore is characterized by fine pebbles and clear, deep waters that take on a vivid turquoise hue, while the bay is fairly well-protected from northern winds. It is a fully organized beach, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and facilities available in front of the area's large hotel complexes (such as Kakkos Bay), yet it maintains a sense of quality and tranquility. Its seabed is particularly interesting for snorkeling, especially at the edges of the cove where the rocks create small underwater caves and crevices.
Access is very easy from the main road via downhill paths leading directly to the sand. Kaki Skala manages to combine the rugged beauty of the Cretan landscape with the comfort of modern amenities, making it an ideal choice for those who wish to enjoy their swim in a setting that feels secluded but offers everything within reach.
