Katarti Beach is another hidden paradise on the southern coast of the Heraklion region, situated between Salamias and Tripiti, at the foot of the imposing Asterousia Mountains
It is a very small and narrow cove with deep, crystal-clear waters and fine pebbles, surrounded by high cliffs that give it a sense of total protection and isolation. Its name ("Katarti" meaning mast) likely stems from a rock formation in the area resembling a ship's mast.
Access to the beach is particularly difficult, as there is no road leading directly to it. The most common way to reach it is by sea with a boat from Lentas or Agios Ioannis. Alternatively, experienced hikers can reach it via a rugged coastal path connecting Tripiti and Agios Ioannis, a route that offers stunning views of the Libyan Sea but requires endurance and proper gear.
In terms of organization, Katarti is a completely unorganized beach, keeping its pristine beauty intact. There is no infrastructure or shade, except for what the cliffs provide during the afternoon hours. It is the ideal destination for those seeking absolute silence and the feeling of being in their own "private" corner of Crete. The seabed is exceptionally rich, making the beach a favorite spot for snorkeling enthusiasts.
