Red Beach is one of the most unique and recognizable shores in Crete, located on the southern side of the Heraklion region.
Geographically, it is situated directly south of the famous settlement of Matala, separated by a high hill that offers panoramic views of the Libyan Sea.
The beach's landscape is singular, owing its name to the characteristic reddish-brown color of the sand and surrounding cliffs, a result of the local rock composition. Its waters are crystal clear with a deep turquoise hue, creating a striking contrast against the red shore.
Access to Kokkini Ammos is primarily via a hike (approximately 20-30 minutes) along a trail starting from Matala; while steep in some sections, it rewards visitors with stunning scenery. Alternatively, the beach can be reached by a small boat from Matala harbor.
Regarding organization, the beach is partially organized, typically featuring a small canteen providing essentials and a few umbrellas. Kokkini Ammos maintains an alternative and authentic atmosphere, serving as a long-standing favorite destination for nudists and those seeking a more pristine environment compared to the main Matala beach.
