Ano Peristeras Cave is located in eastern Crete, within the Lasithi regional unit, near the village of Karydi in the wider area of Sitia.
It lies at an altitude of around 650 meters and is considered one of the most important and extensive cave systems in the region.
The cave is part of a large underground karst system and is characterized by the presence of an underground river. The total explored length exceeds 5,500 meters, while its depth reaches more than 220 meters, making it a site of great speleological significance in Crete.
Inside the cave, there are numerous vertical shafts and water-filled chambers, along with natural wells formed throughout the system. Exploring the cave is highly demanding and requires specialized caving and cave-diving equipment, as well as experience in vertical descent techniques.
The cave also plays an important role in the local hydrological system, as it contributes to supplying water to the wider area, including the region of Chochlakies. This highlights its importance not only as a natural formation but also as a vital water source for the surrounding ecosystem.
Access to the cave is not organized, and visiting its interior is not possible for the general public due to the high level of difficulty and potential danger. However, the surrounding area offers a rugged and authentic landscape of eastern Crete, with strong geological features and natural beauty.
Ano Peristeras Cave is one of the most impressive and technically demanding underground formations in Crete, attracting mainly experienced speleologists and researchers.
