Agioi Deka is a historic settlement in the Heraklion prefecture, built in the heart of the fertile Messara plain, in an area of immense archaeological and religious significance
The village owes its name to the Ten Martyrs (Agioi Deka) who were martyred in the area during Roman times, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Crete.
The most remarkable feature of Agioi Deka is its immediate proximity to the Archaeological Site of Gortyna, the ancient capital of Crete and Cyrenaica during the Roman period. Within a very short distance from the residential fabric, visitors can admire great monuments such as the Temple of Apollo, the Odeon with the famous Great Inscription (the Gortyn Law Code), and the impressive Basilica of Saint Titus.
The settlement is built along the main road axis connecting Heraklion with southern Crete and the beaches of Matala, offering easy access to travelers. The daily life of the residents is inextricably linked to the rich agricultural production of Messara, while the village features modern infrastructure, such as the local sports field, and maintains its vitality as an administrative and spiritual center of the region.
