Mesa Potamoi is one of the most picturesque and "refreshing" mountain villages in Lasithi, built at an altitude of approximately 900 meters on the slopes of Mount Dikti.
As its name suggests ("Inner Rivers"), the village is situated in a lush valley characterized by running waters and natural springs, creating a landscape that is rare in the otherwise rugged Cretan countryside.
The area is defined by its rich vegetation, with towering plane trees, walnut trees, and orchards dominating the scenery. Mesa Potamoi serves as an important mountain pass for those heading toward the Lasithi Plateau from the direction of Neapolis or Agios Nikolaos. Visitors will find a settlement that maintains absolute tranquility, featuring traditional stone-built houses and old churches that testify to the village's long history.
One of the main attractions of Mesa Potamoi is its authentic gastronomy. The local tavernas (such as Taverna Marianna, visible on your map) are famous for their pure ingredients and traditional dishes, offering an ideal stop for relaxation amidst nature. The village also serves as a starting point for hiking trails toward the peaks of Mount Dikti, providing fresh mountain air and a unique sense of hospitality found only in the highland villages of Crete.
