Profitis Ilias (formerly known as Kanli Kastelli) is one of the most historic and vibrant villages in the Heraklion prefecture, built at the foot of the imposing Roka rock.
Its strategic location, close to the city of Heraklion, makes it an ideal destination that combines rich tradition with the unique natural beauty of the Cretan hinterland.
The village's landmark is the steep hill of Roka, dominated by the ruins of the Byzantine fortress built by Nicephorus Phocas in 961 AD. A climb to the top offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the vast vineyards and olive groves of the region, while the remnants of the walls and ancient cisterns transport visitors back to the era of knights and Byzantine lords.
Within the settlement, life moves at a traditional pace. The village is renowned for the exceptional quality of its agricultural products, particularly its wine and olive oil. The locals proudly preserve their customs and hospitality, while the central square, with its old churches and traditional cafes, remains the heart of the community, maintaining the authentic atmosphere of the Cretan countryside.
