Lichnistis Gorge, also known as Maridaki Gorge, is located in southern Crete, within the Heraklion regional unit, on the eastern side of the Asterousia Mountains.
It is an impressive natural attraction that combines rugged landscapes with notable geological interest.
The gorge begins in the plain of Achentrias, at a location known as “Faraggouli,” and ends at Maridaki Beach on the southern coast of Crete. Its total length is approximately 640 meters, and crossing it usually takes around 3 hours.
One of the most distinctive features of the gorge is its waterfalls. Near the end of the route, a series of five waterfalls is formed. The largest and most impressive is “Lichnistis,” with a height of about 65 meters. The gorge takes its name from this waterfall, as the falling water appears to “sway” or “swing” as it descends.
Despite the wild and rocky landscape of the Asterousia range, the gorge is considered relatively accessible and is suitable even for beginner canyoners, although caution and basic equipment may be required in certain sections.
The landscape is characterized by strong geological diversity, with alternating rock formations and dry Mediterranean vegetation, offering a unique view of southern Crete.
Lichnistis Gorge is a distinctive destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers, providing a unique exploration experience that combines canyoning and coastal scenery.
