Myli Gorge (the Gorge of the Mills) is an earthly oasis just a breath away from the city of Rethymno.
It is one of the most unique canyons in Crete, serving not only as a natural landmark but also as an open-air museum reflecting the island's pre-industrial history.
The defining feature of the gorge is the dozens of ruins of old watermills scattered along the trail. These mills, which were operational until the mid-20th century, harnessed the power of water to grind grain for the entire region. Hiking past the stone structures, ancient bridges, and the remnants of the abandoned village of Myli creates a feeling that time has stood still.
The trail is lush and easy, making it ideal for families and novice hikers. The path winds through dense vegetation of plane trees and fruit trees, while birdsong and the sound of running water accompany visitors at every step. Along the gorge, you will also find picturesque chapels, such as Agios Antonios and Agios Ioannis, perched against the rocky cliffs.
Myli Gorge is the perfect destination for a short escape from the city's pace, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, freshness, and historical heritage in the heart of Rethymno.
