Pefki Gorge is one of the most beautiful and accessible canyons in Southeastern Crete.
Located in the Lasithi region, it starts just outside the traditional village of Pefki and ends near the coastal resort of Makry Gialos (Analipsi).
As its name suggests ("Pefki" means pine trees in Greek), the gorge’s defining feature is the impressive pine forest that surrounds it, one of the few remaining in the area. The air is filled with the scents of pine, thyme, and sage, while the towering white limestone cliffs create a stunning contrast with the deep green of the trees and the distant blue of the Libyan Sea.
The trail is well-marked and relatively easy, making it ideal for an enjoyable hike of about 2 hours. Along the path, visitors will encounter interesting geological formations, ruins of old watermills, and a large cave once used by local shepherds. The most striking feature of the gorge is its steep cliffs, which serve as nesting grounds for various birds of prey.
Pefki Gorge is an excellent choice for those staying on the southern coast of Lasithi, offering a unique connection to untouched nature and concluding just a short distance from the beaches of Makry Gialos for a well-deserved post-hike swim.
