The Monument “The Last Hainis” is located in the mountain settlement of Gonies in the Malevizi municipality of the Heraklion region and commemorates Michaël Kalisperis (also known as Vlachos), one of the most distinguished figures of the Cretan Revolution during Ottoman rule.
The term “hainis” comes from the Turkish word hain, meaning “traitor,” but in the local revolutionary context it became associated with the guerilla fighters who resisted the occupiers. Kalisperis was born in Gonies in 1822 and became a leading resistance figure from an early age, operating from caves and mountainous terrain around Psiloritis.
The statue was created as a tribute to his bravery and symbolic importance; his actions made him feared by the occupiers and celebrated by locals. The monument serves as a reminder of Cretan history during Ottoman times and the enduring value of freedom for the people of the region.
