Amari Dam is located in central Crete, within the Rethymno regional unit, in the fertile Amari Valley.
It is a relatively recent and important hydraulic project, constructed to meet the water needs of the wider area.
The artificial reservoir was created primarily for irrigation purposes, supporting the agricultural production of the valley, where olives, vineyards, and other crops are cultivated. At the same time, it contributes to water resource management by collecting and storing water during periods of rainfall.
The dam is fed by local water sources and is connected to the inland hydrological network of Rethymno, while its presence has created a new aquatic landscape within an otherwise agricultural setting.
Over time, the lake has begun to gain ecological importance, attracting bird species and enhancing the biodiversity of the area. The landscape around the reservoir is characterized by tranquility and natural beauty, offering a different perspective of the Cretan countryside.
Amari Dam is a modern example of water resource utilization in Crete, combining agricultural support with the development of a new natural ecosystem.
