Faneromeni Dam is located in southern Crete, within the Heraklion regional unit, in the fertile plain of Messara, near the village of Faneromeni.

It is one of the most important water management projects in the area and plays a key role in supporting agricultural irrigation.

The reservoir was created to meet the growing water demands of the Messara plain, one of the largest and most productive agricultural regions in Crete. Its waters are mainly used for irrigating olive groves, vegetable crops, and other cultivations, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Despite its artificial origin, the dam has developed into a notable wetland habitat. The year-round presence of water attracts various bird species and enhances the biodiversity of the area. Around the lake, aquatic and lakeside vegetation has developed, creating a calm and natural landscape.

Faneromeni Dam combines functionality with natural beauty, representing a characteristic example of the balance between human intervention and the natural environment in southern Crete.
