The Karteros River is located in northern Crete, within the Heraklion region, just east of the city of Heraklion.
It flows into the Cretan Sea at Karteros Beach, forming part of the coastal landscape of the area.
The river has a primarily seasonal flow, as it is fed by rainfall and runoff from the surrounding lowlands and hills. During the winter months, water levels increase significantly, while in summer the flow is greatly reduced or limited to certain sections of the riverbed.
Along its course, the Karteros River passes through agricultural land and shallow valleys, contributing to the formation of a more fertile zone compared to the surrounding terrain. Even as a seasonal watercourse, it supports local vegetation and small ecosystems.
At its mouth, the river creates a small wetland area with reeds and typical riparian vegetation, adding diversity to the coastal environment of Karteros Beach. This transition zone between land and sea gives the area a distinct natural character.
Although not a permanently flowing river, the Karteros River plays an important role in shaping the local landscape and represents a typical example of the seasonal rivers found in northern Crete.
