Ancient Aptera, situated on a strategic plateau overlooking Souda Bay, is the most impressive archaeological site in Chania and was one of the most powerful city-states of ancient Crete.
The city thrived during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, controlling two key ports and serving as a major commercial hub in the Mediterranean. Its most striking features today are the massive Roman cisterns, exceptionally preserved with their imposing arches, showcasing advanced ancient engineering. Visitors can also explore the ancient theater, which has been significantly restored, and the formidable "Cyclopean" walls that protected the city. The site also hosts later monuments, including an Ottoman fortress with commanding views of the sea and the White Mountains, making Aptera a unique crossroads of history and natural beauty.
