Diktamos Gorge (also known as Katohori Gorge) is one of the most stunning yet lesser-known "green" treasures of the Chania region.
Located just 21 kilometers from Chania city, it begins at the village of Katohori in the Keramia district and ends at the village of Faraggi, near Stylos.
What sets Diktamos apart is its lush, wild vegetation. The gorge is forested with massive plane trees, holm oaks, and walnut trees. It owes its name to the famous Diktamos (dittany), Crete's endemic healing herb that grows on its steep cliffs. Most of the trail is shaded, making it an excellent choice for a hike even during the warm summer months.
The trail is approximately 7-8 kilometers long, taking about 3 to 4 hours to complete. While generally considered of moderate difficulty, there are sections where hikers must navigate over large boulders that have fallen into the riverbed, requiring steady footing and proper hiking shoes. Throughout the journey, the towering rock formations and the singing of wild birds create an atmosphere of absolute tranquility.
For lovers of authentic Crete, Diktamos Gorge is the perfect escape, combining the serenity of untouched nature with close proximity to Chania, concluding in areas famous for their traditional local taverns.
