Grandes is a small coastal islet located just off the northeastern coast of Crete, directly opposite the beach of Hiona, near Palekastro in the Sitia region.
It lies at a very short distance from the mainland, making it clearly visible from the shore and easily accessible by small boat or, under favorable weather conditions, even by swimming. Unlike more remote islets of Lasithi, such as the Dionysades, Grandes is closely connected to the everyday landscape of the area.
The islet features low elevation and a gentle relief, with limited vegetation and a mix of rocky and sandy spots along its shoreline. The surrounding waters are shallow and crystal clear, which makes it a popular spot for swimming and exploration among visitors of Hiona and Palekastro.
Despite its small size, its position in front of an open and exposed bay gives it a distinct geographical presence, acting as a natural point of reference in the coastal scenery. It has no infrastructure or permanent human presence, maintaining a simple and unspoiled character.
Grandes is a small yet characteristic element of eastern Crete’s coastal landscape, combining easy access with a subtle sense of island isolation.
