Livadi Plateau of Krousonas is located in central Crete, within the Heraklion regional unit, near the village of Krousonas, on the northern slopes of Psiloritis (Mount Ida)
It is one of the most notable mountain plateaus in the area, known for its natural beauty and traditional character.
At an altitude of around 1,000 meters, the plateau is surrounded by mountainous terrain and features an open landscape with grasslands, low vegetation, and seasonal water presence. During the winter months, it is often covered with snow, while in spring and summer it becomes lush and green.
The area is mainly used for livestock farming and limited agriculture, playing an important role in local production. A distinctive feature of the plateau is the presence of traditional “mitata”—stone-built shepherd huts that are part of the island’s cultural heritage.
Livadi Plateau also has ecological value, as it hosts flora and fauna adapted to mountain conditions. At the same time, it is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers who wish to experience the authentic Cretan landscape.
Livadi Plateau of Krousonas is a characteristic example of a mountain plateau in Crete, combining natural beauty, traditional practices, and rural activity.
