Psiloritis Mountain, also known as Mount Ida, is the highest mountain in Crete, with its peak at Timios Stavros reaching 2,456 meters above sea level. It rises majestically in the center of the island, spanning the regions of Heraklion and Rethymno, and acts as a natural divide between the eastern and western parts of Crete.
The mountain range includes several other high peaks above 2,000 meters, such as Agathias, Stolistra, and Voulomenou, forming an impressive geological landscape.
Psiloritis is renowned for its dramatic scenery, featuring steep slopes, deep gorges, expansive high plateaus like the Nida Plateau, and rare flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to Crete.
The slopes of Psiloritis offer countless opportunities for hiking and mountaineering. One of the most popular trails is the ascent to the summit at Timios Stavros from the Nida Plateau, a rewarding journey that offers breathtaking panoramic views across Crete - from the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in the west to the Aegean and Libyan Seas.
